10:40 PMHines Ward waltzed (well, technically he samba-ed) away with the coveted Mirror Ball Trophy to end Season 12 of ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" Tuesday evening. The two-time Super Bowl champion graciously thanked the fans, the judges for their constructive criticism throughout the season, and gave the credit for his victory to his professional dance partner, Kym Johnson.
Ward, dressed in Steelers colors (black with gold piping), and Johnson scored perfect marks on their last dance, a samba enegetically performed to Earth, Wind, and Fire's hit "Fantasy." Truth to tell, all three finalists made perfect scores with their last passes, but the voting by the viewers would have the final say. Actress and sentimental favorite to win Kirstie Alley got a perfect 30 for her (and partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy's) Cha-cha-cha to Cee Lo Green's "Forget You." Chelsea Kane and professional partner Mark Ballas, who were tied with Ward and Johnson in the judges scoring from the night before, performed a perfect Viennese Waltz to John Williams' "Hedwig's Theme" (from "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone").
Kane would finish third. Kirstie Alley became the runner-up.
Given Alley's sense of humor, it would have been nothing to see her slip into a perfect Gilda Radner (with whom the Emmy-winning actress shares more than a passing resemblance) and say something to the order of: "Well, of course he won. He was the winner because he stole it. He's a stealer. And he's a professional stealer at that. You know," she could have said to Tom Bergeron, "They've given him awards for being so good at stealing."
To which Tom Bergeron, who has been known to be quick on his feet and, like most people, probably quite the fan of Radner's misguided alter ego, would interject, "But Kirstie. He's a Steeler."
And she would say, "Yes, that's what I said. He's a stealer. He stole the show. He steals."
And Bergeron would explain: "No, no, Kirstie. He's a Steeler with with a double 'e.' As in steel. Made from iron. Not the thief kind. He's a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, the professional football team."
And Kirstie would then put on that simple Rosanne Rosannadanna grin and say, "Nevermind."
That would have been an even more perfect ending to the "Dancing With The Stars" finale. Maybe "Saturday Night Live" can talk Alley into a guest apearance to do a sketch.
Still, it was a perfect night for all-star wide receiver Hines Ward, who has truly been known to steal the show. He won the Super Bowl XL MVP award after aiding his team to a 21-10 win over the Seattle Seahawks, catching 43-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter and amassing 123 yards receiving overall.
