Intel Introduces 10-core Xeon E7 Server Processors

Intel has launched 29 new server processors to its E3 and E7 Xeon families. The E3 server processors are designed for the entry-level users, whereas the E7 server processors are regarded as the Intel’s most powerful server operations. Presumably, E7 server processor has set 14 benchmark records exceeding its Itanium chips.

Intel says that its E7 series that is based on Intel’s 32 nm Westmere-EX architecture provides an improved performance of 40% over the last year’s Westmere-EP based Xeon chips. It is obvious because Westmere-EP based chips offered with six cores while E7 series is offered with 10 cores.

To meet wide range of customer’s demands, Intel E7 series alone composed of 18 products and out of these 18 products, over half of them offer a 10-core, 12-thread, 130W design whereas the remaining may offer six to eight cores along with a 105W TDP. There is a model that offers six-core with 95W TDP.

The most remarkable model of E7 series is the Flagship Xeon E7-8870 that is offered at $4,616 and is equipped with 10-core processors that has the ability to run 20-threads, at 2.4GHz. It also features Turbo Boost and HyperThreading.

The E3 series also has some remarkable features. Its all 11 chips offer with four cores having a support for Turbo Boost and HyperThreading. These processors normally operate at over 3GHz with a peak rate of 3.5GHz. These feature 20W-95W TDP.

Another important aspect of these processors is that they are offered with some enhanced security features such as Intel’s Advanced Encryption Standard New Instruction (AES-NI) that enables the system to encrypt and decrypt data quickly; and Intel’s Trusted Execution Technology (TXT) that guard the applications from maliciousmalware.

Intel has already shipped Xeon E3 and E7 series through 19 major system builders such as Bull, Cisco, Cray, Dell, Fujitsu, Hitachi, HP, IBM, Lenovo, NEC and Oracle
